My domestication led me to believe I needed to perm my hair straight like white women in order to be considered pretty.

At 6 years old began wearing leg braces while I slept because I was knock kneed.
I forced my mother to fix my lazy eye when I was 12 because my classmates constantly made fun of me, “hey Candace, you looking at, me or her”... Braces were necessary before high school because my smile needed to be perfect.
Then after years of sports & a few comments I became self conscious about my breasts & I decided I NEEDED implants. The plastic surgeon in Dayton convinced me a breast lift would do.
So here I was... I had won the title of Miss Ohio USA, appeared in magazines & TV and dated celebrities but somehow I still never truly felt beautiful.
I finally realized I needed to go back to one... where it all began & do some self reflection. Where did all of these insecurities come from? So much of what affected me as an adult stemmed from what others did & said to me as a child. I slowly began to diagnose each wound so that I could heal each one properly.
I am grateful that after many years of “doing the work”, I feel the most beautiful of my entire life at 41 years old because I am madly in love with all of ME. I have empathy for myself without the extreme judgment. I am proud of what I have overcome as well as how I handle everything I am in the midst of. I admire my vulnerability, authenticity, genuine concern for others, passion for life & resilience.
